Personal Interest: What is Super Bowl?

Personal Interest: What is Super Bowl?

The Super Bowl is the championship game of the National Football League (NFL), the highest level of professional football in the United States, culminating a season that begins in the autumn of the previous calendar year. The Super Bowl uses Roman numerals to identify each game, rather than the year in which it is held. For example, Super Bowl I was played on January 15, 1967, following the regular season played in 1966, while Super Bowl XLV will be played on February 6, 2011, to determine the champion of the 2010 regular season.

Wikipedia: Super Bowl

The game was created as part of a merger agreement between the NFL and its then-rival league, the American Football League (AFL). It was agreed that the two leagues' champion teams would play in an AFL–NFL World Championship Game until the merger was to officially begin in 1970. After the merger, each league was redesignated as a "conference", and the game was then played between the conference champions.

The day on which the Super Bowl is played is now considered a de facto American national holiday, called "Super Bowl Sunday". It is the second-largest day for U.S. food consumption, after Thanksgiving Day. In most years, the Super Bowl is the most-watched American television broadcast; Super Bowl XLIV, played on February 7, 2010 between the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts, became the most-watched American television program in history, drawing an average audience of 106.5 million viewers and taking over the spot held for twenty-seven years by the final episode of M*A*S*H. The Super Bowl is among the most watched sporting events in the world, primarily due to mostly North American audiences, and is second to soccer's UEFA Champions League final as the most watched annual sporting event worldwide.

Because of its high viewership, commercial airtime during the Super Bowl broadcast is the most expensive of the year. Due to the high cost of investing in advertising on the Super Bowl, companies regularly develop their most expensive advertisements for this broadcast. As a result, watching and discussing the broadcast's commercials has become a significant aspect of the event. In addition, many popular singers and musicians have performed during the event's pre-game and halftime ceremonies because of the exposure.

Mobile Users vs. Internet Users

Mobile Phone Users Now Exceed 5 Billion while Internet Users Are Now Over 2 Billion

The number of Internet users worldwide has reached the two-billion mark, the head of the UN's telecommunications agency, Hamadoun Toure, said on Wednesday.

The number of mobile phone subscriptions also reached the symbolic threshold of five billion, the secretary general of the UN's International Telecommunications Union (ITU) told journalists.

"At the beginning of the year 2000 there were only 500 million mobile subscriptions globally and 250 million Internet users," he said.

"By the beginning of this year 2011 those numbers have mushroomed to over five billion mobile users and two billion subscribers to the Internet," Toure added.

An ITU statistician told AFP that the figure for mobile telephones related to subscriptions.

Fresh data posted online by the agency showed that the estimated number of Internet users had reached 2.08 billion by the end of 2010, compared with 1.86 billion a year earlier.

The estimated number of cell-phone subscriptions worldwide reached 5.28 billion at the end of the last year, compared with 4.66 billion at the end of 2009, according to the data.

With the world's population exceeding 6.8 billion, nearly one person in three surfs online.

Fifty-seven percent of the users are in developing countries, three years after the ITU reported that Internet use there overtook developed nations.

Personal Daily Interest News: Yahoo Reduced 140 Employees

According to New York Times News (NYTimes.com) posted on January 25, 2011, 1:58 pm by VERNE G. KOPYTOFF in Technology category.

I'm very interested in this news. It says about Yahoo! Inc. Yahoo!, as I know, is a second popular search engine that Internet users search their daily require documents or interest daily news. By January, this month, the second giant search engine company has cut off 140 employees.

Please let me quote some text from New York Times news:

Yahoo disclosed plans on Tuesday to layoff around 140 employees in the latest in a series of job cuts.

The reduction comes a month after the Web portal let around 600 workers go as part of a strategy by Carol A. Bartz, the chief executive, to pare costs and reinvigorate a stagnant business. Previous rounds of layoffs took place in 2009 and 2008.

Tuesday’s cuts were focused on Yahoo’s marketing team, according to a person briefed on the matter who was not authorized to speak on the record. They represent about 1 percent of Yahoo’s global workforce.

“The personnel changes we are making are part of our ongoing strategy to best position Yahoo for revenue growth and margin expansion and to support our strategy to deliver differentiated products and experiences to the marketplace,” the company said in a statement. “We’ll continue to hire on a global basis to support our key priorities...”

Personal Interests: Do You Know The History of Women Soldiers?

Personal Interests: Do You Know The History of Women Soldiers?

Women Soldiers or Women in the military have a history that extends over 4,000 years into the past, throughout a vast number of cultures and nations. Women have played many roles in the military, from ancient warrior women, to the women currently serving in conflicts.

Google Picasa Photo: Beautiful Women Soldiers from around the world

Despite various roles in the armies of past societies, the role of women in the military, particularly in combat, is controversial and it is only recently that women have begun to be given a more prominent role in contemporary armed forces. As increasing numbers of countries begin to expand the role of women in their militaries, the debate continues.

In Cambodia history, during the movement of claiming Cambodia's independence from French colonial empire, Cambodian King Norodom Sihanouk, in order to gain independence from France on November 9, 1953, the King had created a lady movement, called Bravery Lady Army Forces (Kong Chivak Pol Neary Khla harn- កងជីវពលនារីក្លាហាន(Cambodian language)). It was a very great movement to gain the Cambodia independence on November 9, 1953. This is the Women Soldiers history from Cambodia.

Personal Daily Interest News: Google Market Capitalization is Now About $196 Billion

Google's Market Capitalization is Now About $196 Billion

This morning, I read a news from CBS News website (www.cbsnews.com) on a title posted "Google: $100 Million To Eric Schmidt". This information, Google: $100 Million To Eric Schmidt, CBS also got from AP News.

With this news, I'm very interested in about Eric Schmidt and Google's market capitalization which is now about $196 Billion.

First of all, I want to know who is Eric Schmidt?

Let me quote about introduction to Eric Schmidt and his Biography from Wikipedia:

Eric Emerson Schmidt (born April 27, 1955(1955-04-27))[3] is an engineer, Chairman/CEO of Google and a former member of the Board of Directors of Apple Inc.[4] He is a co-author of the lex lexical analyzer software for Unix. He has also sat on the boards of trustees for Carnegie Mellon University[5] and Princeton University.

Biography

Dr. Eric Schmidt was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Blacksburg, Virginia. After graduating from Yorktown High School,[7] Eric Schmidt attended Princeton University where he earned a BSEE in 1976.[8] At the University of California, Berkeley, he earned an MS in 1979 for designing and implementing a network linking the campus computer center, the CS and the EECS departments,[9][10] and a PhD in 1982 in EECS with a dissertation about the problems of managing distributed software development and tools for solving these problems.[11] He was joint author of lex (a lexical analyzer and an important tool for compiler construction). He taught at Stanford Business School as a part time professor.[12]

Dr. Schmidt lives in Atherton, California, with his wife Wendy.[13]

He is also on the list of ARTnews 200 top art collectors.

And let me quote the news which say about Google's market capitalization is now about $196 billion:

Schmidt has led Google since 2001, three years before the company went public in August 2004. Since then, Google's shares have grown more than sixfold, at one point surpassing $700. Google's market capitalization is now about $196 billion. Though it faces a formidable crop of young new rivals, notably Facebook, Google so far has managed to stay on top of the online advertising food chain, relying mainly on its search prowess but flexing its muscles in other areas too.

Daily Personal Interests: I Love Green Bay Packers

This post with my Daily Personal Interests: I would like introduce you about Green Bay Packers. I'm one of his fans.

Green Bay Packers

What Wikipedia says about Green Bay Packers?

Let me quote from Wikipedia:

The Green Bay Packers are an American football team based in Green Bay, Wisconsin. They are members of the North Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL) and are the second-oldest franchise in the NFL.

The Packers are the last vestige of "small town teams" that were once common in the NFL during the 1920s and 1930s. Founded in 1919 by Earl "Curly" Lambeau (hence the name Lambeau Field on which the team plays) and George Whitney Calhoun, the Green Bay Packers can trace their lineage to other semi-professional teams in Green Bay dating back to 1896. In 1919 and 1920 the Packers competed as a semi-professional football team against clubs from around Wisconsin and the Midwest. They joined the American Professional Football Association (APFA) in 1921, the forerunner to what is known today as the National Football League (NFL). The Packers are the only non-profit, community-owned major league professional sports team in the United States.

The Green Bay Packers have won twelve league championships (more than any other team in the NFL) including nine NFL Championships prior to the Super Bowl era and three Super Bowl victories in 1967 (Super Bowl I), 1968 (Super Bowl II) and 1996 (Super Bowl XXXI). The team has historic rivalries with the Chicago Bears, whom they have played in over 180 games, and the Detroit Lions, whom they have played since the 1930's. The Packers also share a fierce blood rivalry with the Minnesota Vikings, who also reside in the NFC North along with the Packers, Bears and Lions in what is known as the "Black and Blue Division" due to the intensity of the rivalry between the four teams. The Dallas Cowboys have historically been known as the Packers' largest playoff rivals after the Packers defeated them in the famous Ice Bowl.[3]

Beginning with the 1992 season, the Packers had 13 non-losing seasons in a row (their worst record being 8–8 in 1999), two Super Bowl appearances, and one Super Bowl win (Super Bowl XXXI). They returned to playoff form with winning campaigns in 2007 (13–3), winning the NFC Championship game to advance to Superbowl XLV in 2010 (10-6) under current head coach Mike McCarthy.
